Tahini Hemp Bites

Tahini Hemp Bites (DSC_1223)Hello friends, it’s been a while since I’ve posted here. I barely have time to shower these days let alone create, photograph and post recipes. Ha! Having a baby will do that to you.  Amal is finally asleep for the night, after a day of being on a sleep strike.  Literally refused to sleep ALL DAY. As desperately as I needed her to sleep for both her sake and mine, I will admit that I miss her now that she is asleep.  Ahhhh the contradictions of motherhood.

I know how cliché this is going to sound, but the last three months have been the most fulfilling, magical 3 months of my life.  I have fallen in love time and again, with this beautiful soul that chose little old me to be her mama.  Nonetheless, amidst all the beauty and magic, these have also been the most challenging and frustrating 3 months of my life. Motherhood. It’s freakin’ hard. Double exclamation mark hard. It’s a huge job, a mammoth undertaking and the greatest responsibility I have ever been given.  No one can prepare you for this and as prepared as you think you are, you inevitably realize you’re not when your baby starts crying and you have no idea how to soothe her despite all the baby books and advice articles you’ve read.

It’s human nature to procreate, so natural indeed that we don’t stop and reflect on it enough.  We want a baby, and if we’re lucky enough, we have one. A BABY, a tiny HUMAN, a LIFE to care for, a SOUL to nurture, a BEING with her own path to pave on her journey through life. We can walk by her side, guiding her, influencing her, picking her up when she falls, providing strength, confidence and comfort, but the path is hers to pave and hers alone. Gosh is it ever darn hard to admit that. Selfishly I’d like nothing more than to hold her tight and never let go. To protect her from the craziness of this world forever more. Yet in my heart of hearts I know I must teach her to fly and set her free one day. But not just yet thankfully.

I tell you, motherhood, it is one big beautiful mess. Chock full of mixed emotions that range from ball your eyes out sleep deprivation induced exhaustion to euphoric ecstasy brought on by a simple smile or sloppy baby kiss. It’s a roller coaster moving at high-speed that never stops spinning, twisting and turning and yet there is a sense of peace and tranquility and a feeling so warm and fuzzy it makes you never want to get off. I’m on this roller coaster for life and boy am I glad to have gotten on; messy hair, dark eye circles, milk stains and all that jazz.

I’ve been full-time baby duty and haven’t spent much time in the kitchen over the last few months. Oh hey, did I mention that we also moved in this time?!! Yes, we’re gluttons for punishment I tell you. We always take the bumpy road, the path less traveled and thankfully it always works out in the end. I’m happy to report that I’m finally feeling adjusted and starting to get back to cooking, baking and treat making more and more as the weeks have gone by and am hoping to be able to do more in the coming weeks as this little babe grows and we settle comfortably into our new home and routine.

If you’ve been reading along, then you know how snack addicted I am.  Incidentally, breastfeeding has left me extra hungry and even more snack addicted than usual. I’ve been snacking mostly on fresh fruit, dates, dried figs and raisins, but lately I’ve started whipping up a lot of these two bite snacks. Energy balls if you will. After posting a shot of these Tahini Hemp Bites on Instagram a few days ago, I’ve had some requests for the recipe from my fellow #tahiniaddict friends, so here it is in all it’s simplicity. I warn you, they taste like candy and you won’t be able to stop at just one. Thankfully they’re packed with only the good stuff like Medjool dates, almond meal, maca, hemp hearts and tahini of course.

Some notes: I have a tiny food processor so I make things in small batches but feel free to double or triple the recipe to make a bunch more. If heaven forbid you are not a tahini lover (shame on you, I’m not sure we can be friends anymore), any runny nut butter will do. Not a fan of dates, I bet soft dried figs would work nicely here, but I haven’t tried that out yet in this recipe. Allergic to almonds, any other nut meal (aka finely ground nuts) will do. I haven’t tried a nut free version but if you give it a whirl please do share in the comments below.

Happy snacking!

These raw tahini hemp bites are naturally sweetened with dates and make the perfect bite size snack.

  • 2 Tbsp Hemp Seeds
  • 2 Tbsp Almond Meal
  • 1 Tsp Maca Powder (optional but adds a nice caramel like flavour).
  1. Process all ingredients on high speed until a sticky crumbly mixture forms.
  2. Roll into bite sized balls, store in the refrigerator and enjoy to your hearts content.
